Why I Love Maths: Unlocking the Secrets of the Universe

It's a question that drills deep to the core of who I am and what I do. I’ve always been good at Maths. A certain amount of talent, combined with a lot of hard work, has led me to earn a degree in Mathematics from Durham University and a Masters in Mathematics Education from Cambridge University. My career has focused on sharing my love of the subject with students around the world.


When I’m asked about my love for Maths, I usually answer:


“Mathematics is a language in itself. Understanding it allows you to unlock so many closed doors: be it the secrets of the universe, the power of a supercomputer, or the ingenuity of modern medicine.”


The Importance of Mathematics in Our Lives


Allow me to share my rationale with you in more detail:


1. Mathematics is the Key to Understanding the World


In today’s world, we are inundated with information. We use Maths to create a framework to decode the complexities around us. We can analyze patterns, draw conclusions, and make informed decisions based on data. Whether it’s analyzing statistics in the news or discovering scientific phenomena, Maths serves as a guide to navigate the world with clarity and insight.


2. Mathematics is the Language of Patterns


At its essence, understanding Maths means understanding patterns and structures. Many of these exist in nature, art, and in the very frameworks that shape our world. From symmetry in design and architecture to the Fibonacci numbers occurring in nature, an understanding of Mathematics reveals order from chaos, hidden in plain sight.


3. Mathematics Rewards Creativity and Innovation


Mathematics is a creative subject that encourages new ways of thinking. It’s a long-held (and incorrect!) view that Maths is just about memorization and rule-following. A lesson with me will show you just how false this is. To be a Mathematician is to take risks, be creative, and think outside the box!


4. Mathematics Encourages and Develops Problem-Solving Skills


One of the greatest and most undervalued skills students can develop is the ability to solve problems—both inside and outside the classroom. Studying Maths teaches us how to approach problems with grit, resilience, and determination. When students learn to think around problems and apply their prior knowledge, they are developing valuable life-long skills that will last far beyond the classroom.


5. Mathematics Develops Confidence and Self-Esteem


Successfully solving an equation and mastering a new concept helps students develop their growth mindset and build confidence. As a tutor, I’m privileged to witness the transformation when students overcome obstacles and master various areas of Maths. This is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job!

Ultimately, my love for mathematics stems from its ability to inspire and challenge. My greatest joy lies in sharing this passion with my students and guiding them through their journey of mathematical discovery.
